About Tuning Your Guitar

It’s essential to learn to tune your guitar in order to make sure people don’t cringe when they hear you play.

You need to tune your guitar before you play and often you’ll have to re-tune in between songs.

As you get more practice at tuning, your “ear” will get accustomed to what sounds right. But as a beginner, you will need someting to get a “reference pitch” from. You can use a tuning fork, a piano, an online source to get the notes to use such as the guitar tuner on the page above.

Most people start by tuning the lowest E string.

If you have a piano, you can use that to tune the E string to.

The strings are the sounds of these notes (from lowest to highest): E A D G B and E.

You can also tune all of your strings to that one low E (once it is tuned). The method to do this is described below:

Steps to Tuning Your Guitar – After tuning tha lowest E string of your guitar:

  1. Play the sixth string, fifth fret (which is an A note), then tune your open fifth string (the A string) until it they sound the same.
  2. Play the fifth string, fifth fret (D), then tune your open fourth string (D) until they sound the same.
  3. Play the fourth string, fifth fret (G), then tune your open third string (G) until they sound the same.
  4. Play the third string, fourth fret (B), then tune your open second string (B) until they sound the same.
